Louth County Council Litter Wardens carry out investigations in response to dumping reported by members of the public

Louth County Council says that its litter wardens completed 95 investigations in response to dumping reported by members of the public during the month of December.

The local authority confirmed that 19 Fixed Penalty Notices (FPNs) were issued in December where evidence was found under the Litter Pollution Act 1997, and added that its litter wardens continue to deal with all litter matters within the county daily responding to complaints from members of the public, councillors and engaging with tidy towns groups and communities.

Among the areas where rubbish was dumped in Louth in December, and where clean ups took place, was Williamsons Place, Dundalk; Templetown Beach; and an ESB substation.

The local authority adds that FPNs continue to be issued under the byelaws for failing to remove bins from a public place. To date, a total of 17 FPNs have been issued under the byelaws. FPN payments which have not been received within the 21 days are being referred for legal action. It further adds that bin presentation surveys are being carried in areas where bin presentation and storage of bin receptacles is an issue, and that FPNs are being issued accordingly.

The local authority also reported that in December, the Department of Communications, Climate Action & Environment issued payment of €76,774.52 to Louth County Council under the Anti-Dumping Initiative (ADI), for the completion of the Mattress and Sofa Amnesty Events held at sites in Dundalk, Drogheda and Ardee in September 2024.
