Ardee native Peter Geraghty, was inaugurated as President of the Planning Officers’ Society for 2024-2025 at its annual meeting in London on the 12 July.

The Planning Officers’ Society (POS) represents around 2,000 individual planners working in 80% of the local authorities and public sector organisations around England.

The society was formed in April 1997 by the amalgamation of the former County Planning Officers’ Society, District Planning Officers’ Society and Metropolitan Planning Officers’ Society, following the decision of the constituent societies, that a single voice for local authority planners would be the most effective way of pursuing good and effective planning practice within and for local government.

The POS represents around 2,000 individual planners working in 80% of the local authorities and public sector organisations around England.

Peter is the eldest son of Breda and P.J. Geraghty from John Street in Ardee. He is the first person to become President of both the Planning Officers’ Society (POS) and the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) being president of the latter in 2013-14.

“As a proud Ardonian and a Louth man through and through I think it is great to represent my native county at the highest level in my profession.” He added. “I am eternally grateful for the support of my parents during my education in Ardee, Dundalk (DkIT) and subsequently at University. I owe so much to them.”
