Call for inventory of 1916 Gardens and memorials in Louth

Cllr Kevin Callan has asked Louth County Council to compile an inventory of 1916 gardens and memorials
Louth County Council is to compile an inventory of all 1916 Gardens and memorials in the county, following a request by a Louth councillor at the local authority’s June meeting.
In a motion at the June meeting, Independent representative, Cllr Kevin Callan, called on Louth County Council to “create an inventory of all 1916 Gardens and Memorials created in the County in 2016 to commemorate the centenary of the 1916 Rising for the purposes of ensuring that tricolour flags are available on a continuous basis for any groups maintaining these sites.
“This motion is set down in the interests of maintaining the flag as the local authority responsible for the county and to continue cooperation with groups working to maintain these important sites.”
Replying to Cllr Callan’s motion, Joanna Kelly, Acting Director of Services, HR, Corporate & Community Delivery, said that: “The Council recognises the significance of the 1916 Gardens and memorials across the County and acknowledges the role of local community groups in their upkeep.
“In this regard, the Council will compile an inventory of all such sites.
“The flying of the National Flag is governed by the national Flag Protocol issued by the Department of the Taoiseach.
“As custodian of public spaces, the Council must ensure that any display of the National Flag is carried out in full compliance with these protocols, including requirements relating to dignity, condition, timing and manner of display.
“In this context, the Council will engage constructively with local groups and communities to support the respectful maintenance of these important commemorative sites, while ensuring adherence to the national standards governing the use of the National Flag.”
