Councillor Keelan called for the graveyard to be better maintained

Local Fianna Fail councillor Conor Keelan has called for greater maintenance efforts at Dowdallshill Graveyard.

Councillor Keelan said that: “St Patrick's Cemetery is the main cemetery in Dundalk, not just a place for burial or to visit loved ones but a place to walk and observe nature, a route that became very popular during Covid.

“As a local councillor for the area I take a keen interest in matters in the local cemetery.

“Whenever the annual patrun occurs this is a major event not just in Dowdallshill but in all Dundalk and North Louth particularly.

“It is depressing to see at the moment that the cemetery is neglected, overgrown, seats unpainted and unmaintained, extra footpaths undeveloped, extra car parking not provided and illegal dumping continuing apace in cemetery skips which prohibit dumping of illegal waste.

“All these matters would help the elderly and those with disabilities better access this public space. All of this work would assist the hard-pressed cemetery staff. Why is this promised investment denied by LCC?”

He concluded: “To be frank as a local resident the people got a much better service in the cemetery from the former Dundalk Town Council which was abolished despite never having had to pay LPT ever for its existence."
