Man ( 34) caused €9,500 worth of damage at the Maxol on the Castletown Road

A 34-year-old man who reversed at speed into a petrol pump at a filling station causing almost €9,500 worth of damage, was given a suspended sentence at Dundalk District Court.

Darren Murden of Fatima Park, Dundalk was summoned for criminal damage arising out of the incident at Maxol on the Castletown Road, Dundalk on June 17th 2018.

The court heard the defendant was returning to his car after paying for fuel, when he reversed after seeing a van that entered the forecourt.

The case was put back for a charitable donation to be made and last Wednesday the Defence solicitor said €300 was in court.

He stressed that the offence happened quite a while ago and his client hasn't re-offended.

The defendant had two previous convictions for arson dating back to 2012.

After the solicitor reiterated that Mr Murden perceived an emergency, when he saw the occupants of the other vehicle, Judge Eirinn McKiernan said the Probation report noted "there was not full compliance", to which the solicitor replied "He is in denial".

The judge imposed a four month suspended sentence, on the defendant entering a bond to be of good behaviour for 12 months.
