PROVINCIAL TOWNS CUP

The Provincial Towns Cup came up short in the second leg of the final against Coollattin on Saturday when they failed to overturn the 4-3 lead which the Wicklow club took home with them from last month’s first leg in Dundalk.

They got off to the best possible start when Des McKeown won the top match on the 19th but then saw Odhran MacShane and Trevor Giff lose on the 18th.

When Paul O’Callaghan and Brendan Keane lost their matches, Coollattin had secured the eight points they needed to secure the title.

In the bottom two matches John Paul Casey was all square after 15 and John McKeever was one up after 14 when they were called in.

While it was disappointing not to bridge the gap to the club’s last Provincial Town’s Cup win in 1984, it was a great run by the Derek Murdock and Mickey Coburn managed team and there is plenty to build on for next year.

Stephen Lynch (10) won the first round of the Cathedral Financial Autumn Series when he shot 43pts to edge out Gary O’Brien (26) by a single point.

Lynch had a birdie at the sixth and 13 pars, nine of which were for three points, as he went out in 21pts and came home in 22pts.

O’Brien also went out in 21pts, helped by three point returns from four holes, and came home in 21pts with a four point birdie at the 13th and three point returns at five other holes.

Brendan Keane (11), Anthony O’Donoghue and Len Mullins (19) were the divisional winners with Garrett Duffy recording the best gross score of the day after shooting 34pts.

Daniel Keane (23) shot 44pts to win the Wednesday Open Singles Stableford sponsored by McKenna Man and had a winning margin of six points.

Tony Macguinness (9), Ciaran Murray (16) and Michael Keating (22) were the divisional winners. Chris Clarke with 36pts had the best gross score.

DUNDALK LADIES

ALL IRELAND SEMI-FINAL

The Revive Active Fourball team’s brilliant run came to an end last Saturday when they lost 4-1 in their All-Ireland semi-final against Gowran Park in Knightsbrook.

The Kilkenny side eventually took the national title with a 3-2 win over Gort in Sunday’s final.

The match was a lot closer than the scoreline might suggest with the three top matches always finely balanced.

However, Gowran Park picked up early wins in the bottom two matches and that left them in a strong position entering the final few holes.

They eventually got the point they needed to book their place with the final with the other two matches, where Dundalk were one up in one and all square in the other, called in.

Great credit must go to Siobhan Rogers and Pat Cleary, who managed the team to a Leinster North title, and their squad of Mary Carthy, Jactina Foran, Mary Lou Grennan, Ann Hopper, Mary Laverty, Ide McDermott. Judy McDonagh, Anne McDonnell, Gillian McDonnell, Sally McDonnell, Grainne Mullins, Anna Rowland, Katie Rowland and Elaine Ward who provided us with some great memories over the past few months.

JUNIOR CUP

There is still a chance of securing the Club’s first national pennant since 2004 later this week when the Junior Cup team face Castletroy in the All-Ireland semi-final at 8am on Thursday in Westport with a place in Friday’s 9am final at stake.
