Dundalk's Kelly welcomes plan for pedestrian crossing at Castletown Road

Dundalk Municipal District March meeting
Dundalk-Carlingford's Cllr Seán Kelly has welcomed the news that Louth County Council plans to invest €50,000 on a new pedestrian crossing at Castletown Pharmacy on the Castletown Road in Dundalk.
Plans for the new crossing were confirmed at the Dundalk Municipal District March meeting. Cllr Kelly first called for this in a motion before Dundalk Municipal District in February 2023.
At the time Cllr Kelly said that the rationale behind a new crossing, "is the fact that there is no other means for pedestrians to cross in close vicinity and there are a lot of children and elderly people on a frequent basis, therefore the lack of a pedestrian crossing is a significant safety concern."
Kelly further added "we have a real safety concern here for locals, at Castletown Pharmacy in particular where people are crossing on a regular basis to visit the pharmacy and local doctors surgery, the nearest crossings to this location is further up the road at Castletown Girls school or the Ecco Road junction".
Louth County Council's response to Cllr Kelly at the time was that the crossing not included in the road programme for 2023 but that the area engineer would investigate and locations would be considered for future funding. The Council have now included this project under the 2024 round of funding.
Cllr Kelly said that "it's another great investment in the North end of town and shows that the Council is listening to the concerns of the people on the grounds. Works should be completed before the end of the summer thankfully."
