Future is bright for FinTech in the North East Dundalk conference hears

The future is bright for fintech in the North-East according to local MEP Colm Markey.
He was speaking after more than 80 people attended a fintech conference in the Fairways Hotel, Dundalk last Friday (November 18th).
The event featured a keynote address from EU Commissioner for Financial Services Mairead McGuinness as well as panel discussions with experts involved in the sector.
The Midlands-North-West MEP said we can build on the potential of the North-East as Ireland’s fintech hub.
He commented:
“I was delighted to host this conference in Dundalk to see what more can be done to support indigenous tech companies in the area while continuing to attract foreign direct investment.
"It’s clear that the Fintech Corridor is the most attractive and accessible location for fintech on the island of Ireland as it serves as a gateway to both the EU and UK.
With our highly skilled workforce and educational collaboration with partners in the north, the opportunities are immense.
"The takeaway message from the conference is that the future is bright for fintech in the North-East."
Markey said the recent job losses in the tech sector globally shouldn’t be too much of a concern.
“We are seeing a rebalancing in terms of tech employment as the big multinationals downsize after expanding too quickly during the pandemic.
I sympathise with all those who have lost their jobs but I believe there are attractive options ahead through our indigenous companies who have been struggling to fill positions in recent years.
"Young people interested in studying tech or those already in college should not worry.
"The sector in Ireland is going from strength to strength and I don’t see that changing any time soon”, he concluded.
