Drogheda based Sinn Féin TD for Louth Joanna Byrne has welcomed the significant improvements at Drogheda Ambulance Station following remedial works

Louth Sinn Féin TD Joanna Byrne has welcomed the “significant improvements” now in place, following remedial works undertaken at Drogheda Ambulance Station.

Following her latest visit to the station on Tuesday Teachta Byrne stated: "This visit to our ambulance station stood in stark contrast to my first visit in 2025 ,where I saw firsthand the unsafe and unsanitary conditions our paramedics had to work in .

“I was genuinely shocked and appalled and left determined to have this addressed.

"While I have consistently raised the need for a new Drogheda station with the Minister for Health and HSE Estates and will continue to pursue this – in the shorter term these remedial works were badly needed at our current Ambulance base.

“I have to commend the local and regional NAS management personnel, past and present for their determination to see these works undertaken and completed, particularly in such a short space of time.”

The remedial works undertaken include

  • New roof to improve the building’s condition and protection from the elements.
  • Internal and external painting throughout the station.
  • New gender-neutral bathroom to provide improved facilities for personnel.
  • New flooring throughout the station.
  • New blinds to improve the internal environment.
  • New water system to enhance the station’s facilities.
  • New kitchen surround and backdrop to improve the kitchen area.
  • New drug room to support the safe and secure management of controlled drugs.
  • New CCTV system to enhance station security and safety.

Deputy Byrne also stated; “A lack of a dedicated quiet space at the station is something that many paramedics had raised with me.

“I am particularly pleased to see that works are progressing to now provide a reflective room for paramedics at the station in the near future, so that paramedics responding to traumatic incidents have a dedicated quiet supportive space in their station when its needed.”

"Our local paramedics are rightly held in the highest regard locally, and I sincerely hope that these remedial works now provide them with a safe and comfortable base to work out of. It is the very least they deserve.

“That said”, she added, “I'll be continuing to work with all stakeholders involved to work towards delivering a new fit-for-purpose Drogheda Ambulance station in the time ahead, and this remains a priority for me as a local TD"
