Louth councillor pushes for floodgates at Omeath Pier

Dundalk Municipal District May meeting
Dundalk-Carlingford's Cllr Antóin Watters has called for a floodgate to be installed at Omeath Pier to help prevent damage to recently completed works in the village, similar to one installed in Blackrock.
In his motion at the Dundalk Municipal District May meeting, Cllr Watters called on Louth County Council to "install a floodgate at Omeath Pier which would close in the event of stormy weather and high tides. The floodgate will help to prevent damage to the recently completed regeneration works. There is a similar gate in Blackrock."
Cllr Watters was informed in a response from the local authority however, that one has not been deemed necessary. Director of Placemaking, Mr David Jones, replied to Cllr Watters' motion to say that, "works are currently ongoing in relation to the Omeath Placemaking Scheme.
"The provision of floodgates has not been provided for or deemed necessary as part of said scheme." Mr Jones added that:
"The public realm works have been developed, and all materials have been chosen to a specification, that are appropriate to a coastal environment, thus negating the need for any protective barrier against potential damage from coastal flooding."
