Louth councillor reminds those working remotely from home to claim tax relief

Cllr Sheridan calls on those remotely working from home in Louth to check if they’re eligible for tax relief
Louth's Cllr John Sheridan has called on those working remotely from home in Louth to check if they’re eligible for tax relief from Revenue.
“I have spoken to a number of local constituents in recent days", said Cllr Sheridan, "who are applying to Revenue for tax relief on their utility bills proportionate to the days they are working from home. The tax relief is to compensate workers for the potential increase in bills related to being at home and can now be claimed for the 2022 tax year and years before it also."
The Ardee councillor continued, "you can claim tax relief for up to 30% of electricity, heat and broadband bills in recent years. The amount you can claim is also restricted depending on the amount of people in a home and the amount of days per year working from home. But that said it still gives some relief to locals to compensate for your bills."
"Since 2019, I have been highlighting the benefits of working from home as an alternative to commuting. Its awful to see so many stuck on the M1 daily when working remotely is technically possible."
Cllr Sheridan added, "working from home may not be for everyone but now many work places offer hybrid of a few days at home and a few days in the office per week. This is a 'best of both worlds' for many people and ultimately saves on unnecessary commuting but still gives human interaction with colleagues a few days per week"
"I also welcome clarification from Revenue that computers or printers at home are not treated as benefits-in-kind where private use is minimal. Obviously any allowances given by employers to employees for working from home must be declared to Revenue. Tax payers can find out more on their Revenue online portal."
