Louth County Council urges dog owners to apply for XL Bully exemption as deadline approaches

The Council say that if you are in doubt the advice is to apply
Louth County Council say they have had a number of enquiries from people who are wondering if they will need a certificate of exemption under the XL Bully ban.
The Council say that if you are in doubt, the advice is to apply, particularly as the exemption is completely free of charge.
If your dog is typed as an XL Bully after 31/01/2025, it will be too late to apply.
If you currently have a puppy that may grow to meet the conformation standards, you should also apply, as it will be too late to do so once the puppy has grown.
Louth County Council said: "After the 1st February 2025, if you are found to have an XL Bully type dog in your possession as determined by the dog warden in accordance with the XL Bully type dog standards, without a Certificate of Exemption or proof of application, the Dog Warden can seize your dog and have your dog euthanised in a humane manner and you may be charged with an offence under the Control of Dogs Act 1986."
