Louth Labour candidate visits local community organisations

Mid-Louth Labour candidate, Kate Karpneko dropped in on the volunteers at Louth SPCA in Dromiskin
It was raining cats and dogs as Mid-Louth Labour candidate, Kate Karpneko dropped in on the volunteers at Louth SPCA in Dromiskin, recently, to see if she could help out.
Ms Karpneko is an animal lover and since making her home in Ardee, she says she has noticed an increasing problem with stray cats and dogs roaming the local streets.
After seeing an ad on social media from Louth SPCS, looking for volunteers to help out in a clean-up of their premises, she seized the opportunity to roll up her sleeves and lend a hand.
“I and some of my friends volunteered at Louth SPCA and had an enjoyable day, cleaning up the facility for the cats and dogs that have made it their home.
“I spoke to Catherine McCann of Louth SPCA and like other animal rescue charities in the area, she spoke of record numbers of pets being surrendered and ever-increasing demands on their services.”
The Ardee-based candidate said: “It is heartbreaking to see so many animals without a permanent place to call home and a family to take care of them.
“Services like the one provided by Louth SPCA are so important but they are under pressure, more than ever. It appears that pets that were taken home during lockdown when people were working from home are being abandoned now that people are returning to their places of work.”
The Labour candidate said: “Investment is needed to support services like this one and in the meantime, they need volunteers.
“If you love animals and have a few hours to spare, your nearest pet rescue service would be delighted to hear from you.”
Ms Karpneko has been getting involved in all kinds of community work from this visit to the Louth SPCA to participating in community clean-ups in Ardee, Dunleer and Collon.
She said: “Community spirit is alive and well in mid-Louth and I would encourage anyone out there to get involved in their local Tidy Towns effort and put something back into the community.
“I’ve met so many wonderful, community-minded people as I’ve travelled around the area on the campaign and it really motivates me to represent them on Louth County Council and help make this a region that works for all of its people.”
