Louth native Rod releases Oppenheimer book for kids

The 48-page, fully illustrated book explores the life of Robert Oppenheimer
Louth native Rod Smith from Drogheda has released the first book in the new "Epic Events" series, The Destroyer of Worlds – Oppenheimer and the Atomic Bomb. Part of the bestselling In A Nutshell collection, this series aims to introduce younger readers (aged 8+) to major historical events in an engaging and accessible way.
The 48-page, fully illustrated book explores the life of Robert Oppenheimer, the creation of the atomic bomb, and the experiences of Japanese hibakusha survivors who survived the dropping of the bomb and campaigned for an end to nuclear weapons.
Smith, who now resides in Malahide, is a seasoned author with 16 books under his belt. A familiar face in schools, he enjoys discussing everything from writing to pop culture with students. He is also a qualified FAI Football Referee in children’s football and is now working on his next book about the Irish Famine.
Rod is also supportive of up-and-coming authors and is personally funding a number of bursaries for unpublished authors through Children’s Books Ireland.
As a follow up to these visits last year, teachers, students and parents were surveyed to decide what historical topics they would like to see in future publications.
The Atomic Bomb and World War 2 was by far the most popular choice.
The Destroyer of Worlds is published by Poolbeg and is available now for €5.99.
