Down Syndrome Centre North East gearing up for its annual "Lots of Socks" awareness campaign

The Down Syndrome Centre North East (DSCNE) is gearing up for its annual "Lots of Socks" awareness campaign on Friday, 21 March 2025, in celebration of World Down Syndrome Day, and people in Louth are urged to take part.

As part of the event, DSCNE will also be hosting a coffee morning from 10am to 1pm, and is inviting everyone to visit the centre in Carrickmacross, enjoy some refreshments, and learn more about the important work being done to support children with Down syndrome, and their families, across the North East.

In recent years, DSCNE’s "Lots of Socks" has seen over 100 schools and businesses take part annually in this fun and meaningful  event, raising awareness and also as a fundraiser too for the local charity. Participants receive information packs filled with educational resources about Down syndrome, along with fun activities to start conversations and celebrate the day. But the highlight of the event? The socks!

  • Why socks? The event’s date—3/21—symbolises the uniqueness of Trisomy 21, as it is the 21st chromosome that is triplicated in Down Syndrome.  Chromosomes under a microscope look a bit like “socks”.
  • Socks can be individual and but also have similarities to other socks. So by wearing bright, mismatched socks it is a fun and visible way to raise awareness and start conversations about inclusion and acceptance.

Join The Down Syndrome Centre North East in making this year's event bigger than ever. Whether you’re a school, business, or individual looking to take part, get your socks ready and help to celebrate the amazing individuals in our community.
