Deputy Munster has announced her intention not to seek re-election

Louth Sinn Féin TD Ruairí Ó Murchú, has paid a warm tribute to his party colleague Deputy Imelda Munster who has announced her intention not to seek re-election.

The Dundalk-based TD said he wished Deputy Munster all the very best and said he had been honoured to work alongside, and be elected alongside, the Drogheda poll-topper.

He said: "Imelda has been an exceptional public representative for Drogheda and for Louth for two decades. She has been a passionate and hard-working advocate for her beloved town and for all of Louth, both in the council and in Leinster House.

"She is an extraordinary TD, always able to get to the heart of the matter and is uncompromising and fearless in holding the powers that be to account.

"She works really hard for people in her constituency and has been a wonderful colleague to me for many years. We worked together for almost 20 years within Sinn Féin. She was always someone I, and many others, sought out for advice on issues.

"I am sad to know that we will not fight the next general election together as candidates, but I know that she will remain as committed as she has always been in her republicanism and I know she will support all of us who carry on in public life for Sinn Féin.

"I wish Imelda and Niall, and the family, all the very best for the future."
