Man jailed for punching his partner, Dundalk court heard

A 36 year old man who punched his partner multiple times with a closed fist, leaving her bleeding from her mouth, was given a three month sentence at Dundalk District Court last week.
The court heard the woman told gardaí who responded to the incident on September 20th last that the defendant had attempted to hit her with a hatchet.
The woman who was aware the case was listed for hearing last Wednesday, did not attend court to give evidence.
The court was told the defendant had 28 previous convictions.
The Defence solicitor described his client as a rather hapless individual of low intellectual capacity, with a drug dependency, which had been compounded by the deaths of three family members including a baby and unfortunately on the night in question “tempers were lost and this assault took place”.
The defendant had been in custody since his arrest on the same date.
The solicitor added the 36 year old misses his children, but he will not be able to return to the house when he gets out and he wishes this had never happened as it's not typical of his relationship.
Judge Eirinn McKiernan imposed a three month sentence backdated to when the defendant went into custody.
