Louth County Council says a new procedure is being put into place to facilitate its Waste Management & Environment team actively investigating reports of abandoned vehicles within the County.

It says that its litter wardens check the vehicle for its condition/ tax / insurance and NCT. If the opinion is formed that the vehicle may be abandoned the owner is contacted advising them to contact the Waste Management & Environment Department.

If no reply is received a final reminder is issued before the vehicle is removed by Louth County Council. If the owner then makes contact within four weeks of the vehicle having been removed and proves ownership, the vehicle is released on payment of all associated removal and storage costs.

Louth County Council says it actively works with all vehicle owners and it will only investigate abandoned vehicles in public areas and estates which are taken in charge. Abandoned vehicles on privately owned land will not be investigated.

To date this year, the Waste Management & Environment Section has received 44 complaints regarding abandoned vehicles which have all been investigated.
