Green Party Councillor Marianne Butler asked if there could be a mechanism put in place to allow young people aged 16-17 to pre register for the electoral register in Louth at the council’s monthly meeting on Monday.

She also asked if the council had any plans to promote checktheregister.ie so that “there’s none of this nonsense [of delays and difficulties registering] when it comes to a referendum or local elections and national elections.  So the minute you turn 18 you are on the new register.”

“I think we are one of the strong counties when it comes to Comhairle na nÓg and [engaging] with young people,” she added.

In response, Director of Service Joe McGuinness said that there was an ongoing national campaign to encourage people to check the register and notify them of changes to the registering process.

“We’re [Louth] in a good place, we have 94% of households that have an eircode on the system which means that that property can be validated with the correct polling district.

“It is really worth people’s while to make sure they are recorded property, there will be a lot of changes seen including people moving from one place to the other because of the use of the eircode,” he said.
