Residents share vision for Inniskeen's future at public meeting

Community gathers to discuss long-term plans for infrastructure
A public meeting held in Inniskeen on Wednesday night provided a platform for residents to voice their hopes, concerns, and ideas for the future development of their village. The meeting, organised by Inniskeen Enterprise Development Group, and attended by a significant number of community members and local representatives, focused on long-term planning, infrastructure development, and sustainable growth for Inniskeen.
The meeting was convened to discuss the draft County Development Plan and to ensure that community perspectives are incorporated into future planning decisions. A presentation was given outlining a proposed master plan that seeks to balance modern development with the village’s rich heritage.
The importance of forward-thinking was one of the key themes. The meeting was told that while a 20-year timeframe may seem distant, long-term planning is essential for sustainable growth; using examples such as the relocation of Inniskeen Football Club and the rapid advancements in technology and infrastructure over the past two decades.
A community-wide consultation conducted in late 2024 highlighted several core concerns and aspirations, which were discussed extensively during the meeting. Among the key priorities were:
Parking and Infrastructure: The need for structured parking solutions was identified as a pressing issue, particularly around the village center, schools, and community facilities. A proposal was put forward for a new bus and car park to accommodate visitors and support local businesses.
Education and Housing: With an expanding population, calls for a new school and additional housing developments were made, ensuring the community can grow sustainably while maintaining the village’s character.
Recreational Amenities: The development of a ‘destination playground’ similar to those in surrounding towns was proposed. This would cater to families from across the region, making Inniskeen an attractive location for visitors.
Tourism and Heritage: Inniskeen’s cultural heritage, particularly its association with poet Patrick Kavanagh, was highlighted as a key asset. Plans for a Greenway linking Dundalk and Carrickmacross were also discussed, which could bring increased tourism and economic benefits to the village.
Sustainable Development: Proposals for improving walking trails, upgrading the community center, and developing local water sports facilities at the old mill were shared, ensuring Inniskeen remains an engaging and vibrant destination for residents and tourists alike.
Locals stressed the necessity of collaboration between the community and Monaghan County Council to secure funding and implement these ambitious plans. Representatives from the local authority were urged to support the master plan and ensure that grants and public funding are maximised for the benefit of the village.
The willingness of local landowners to offer land for development was recognized as a significant opportunity. With land available, attendees stressed that action must be taken immediately to design a comprehensive master plan that accommodates future needs. As the meeting concluded, community leaders encouraged residents to stay engaged in the redevelopment process.
