Plunketts suffer first defeat of campaign

Division 3A

NH FIONNBARRA 2-7

OLIVER PLUNKETTS 1-8

Oliver Plunketts suffered their first defeat of the Division 3A League campaign when they lost out to Nh Fionnbarra at Ballygassan on Saturday evening.

The Drogheda side travelled in search of a fifth successive win but they were unable to repeat the performances of earlier rounds against a revitalised Barrs outfit. It certainly was a welcome win for the hosts as they got off the mark in the division after three successive defeats.

The victory was based on a strong first half display from the hosts as goals from Conor Osborne and Martin Murphy saw them build up a 2-6 to 0-4 lead at the short whistle.

The Plunketts fought back well in the second half with the help of points from Kristian Nolan and a Niall Murtagh goal. However, the Barrs did enough in the end to hold out despite scoring just once in the second half.

The Naps started the second half well scoring the first two points to leave a goal between the sides but the Mitchels kicked on from here with two John Gallagher frees before a high ball ended up with Micky Quinn finishing to the net in a composed manner.

The Tallanstown side lost full back Darren McKeever who was carried off on a stretcher midway through the half, while the home side increased their lead to five with the next three points from Emmet Byrne, Quigley and Conlon. Points from Tadgh Kellett and Ciaran Sheridan were the last of the half to leave the score at the break 0-7 to 0-4.

Kellett got his second point of the game and the first of the second half but the Bellingham side had the ball in the net a couple of minutes later after Conlon put Agnew through and he finished for the three pointer.

Substitutes Harry Kierans and Sean Devaney put over points for their teams and Sheridan pointed from another excellent 45 to leave the score 1-8 to 0-7 after 45 minutes.

WESTERNS 1-13

One point winning margin showed how close it was in Mountrush on Saturday night as the Sean McDermotts claimed the local bragging right over neighbours Westerns.

The visitors with a big tally will wonder how they didn’t get something out of the game but as the old adage goes, goals win games and the winners hit the net four times.

Both teams went point for point until it was five each - Stephen Finegan, Fionn Meagher and another Kirwan free for the visitors. The home team took the lead from a Rory Phelan penalty before half time.

An early Fionn Meagher goal pushed St. Nicholas into the lead early in the second half. A resolute defensive effort from the Nicks kept them in front, while points from Brian Carter and Kirwan extended the lead.

A fine solo goal from Kirwan had the Nicks up by five as the clock approached the last five minutes.
