Student Dearbhla Leavy of St Vincent's school in Dundalk scoops top award

St. Vincent's School science department recently celebrated as third year student Dearbhla Leavy took first place in her category at the PExpo Ireland competition.

PExpo is an interactive Physical Education and sport-focused showcase event designed for secondary school students, educators, and the wider physical activity community.

The event encourages students to explore Physical Education topics through research, innovation, and hands-on experiences.

Dearbhla competed in the PExpo Ireland competition under the category 'Physical, psychological and tactical demands of performance: Analysis of training, skill, and technique'.

Dearbhla won her category and as there is only one winner in each category this highlights the excellent standard of her work.

She had previously enjoyed success at the Young Scientists where she won third place in the Individual Biological and Ecological category.

The title for Dearbhla’s project was 'An investigation into the effect of arm strength and core strength on the ability to perform a handstand successfully'.

Dearbhla described the event saying: “It was very exciting to take part in this competition and to see the wide range of projects on display.

“It was such a good experience, and to win my category was a great reward for all the hard work. “I'm very interested in Science and may pursue my studies at third level in this area.

“This has given me a really good starting point.

“I'd particularly like to thank my teacher Laura McGrory for all her help and guidance.”
