Lauren Duffy from Dundalk secretly flew home from Sydney to Ireland, after winning the national Allianz "Coming Home for Match Day” competition

Lauren Duffy, an oncology nurse living in Sydney, has pulled off an emotional once-in-a-generation family reunion surprise for her adored grandad Johnny after secretly flying home to Ireland, after winning the national Allianz "Coming Home for Match Day" competition.

Lauren, originally from Dundalk, has spent the last four and a half years working on the frontlines of cancer care in Australia. Despite the 17,000 kilometre distance and demanding 1:00am match broadcast times, she has remained one of Louth’s most passionate supporters, and her dedication to the Wee County has paid off in the ultimate way.

Lauren touched down at Dublin Airport on Thursday 9 July, to begin a whirlwind nine-day visit entirely dedicated to family, football, and most importantly, to surprise her grandad, who was in attendance the last time Louth reached this historic level in 1957.

While her family knew she was coming home, Johnny was kept completely in the dark. Unaware that his granddaughter travelled halfway around the world to surprise him, he was left speechless when he saw her, before the pair shared an emotional reunion and long-awaited embrace.

For Lauren, the true prize isn't just the flights home and the tickets to the match, but who she gets to share them with. GAA has always been an anchor for her family.

Some of her happiest early memories are of following Louth football alongside her father and her beloved grandfather. Living in Sydney has meant missing major family milestones, birthdays and Louth’s Leinster final appearance last year.

This trip bridges that gap perfectly. Lauren will walk down Jones Road to Croke Park alongside her dad and grandad Johnny. Joining them in the stadium will be her mum, her two younger sisters, and a close-knit group of lifelong friends from home.

"Coming home for a Louth match at this level is a once-in-a-generation moment for our family, but surprising Granda has proved to be the most incredible part of this prize," said Lauren, reflecting on the win.

"To experience the raw energy of match day with my dad and Granda after years of watching streams in the middle of the night from Sydney, means more than I can possibly put into words.”

The Allianz "Coming Home for Match Day" competition is designed to reconnect Irish expats with their communities and families during the peak of the GAA Senior Football Championship.
