Turas launches new gambling service for Dundalk

Last week Turas launched a new gambling counselling service for Dundalk and surrounds. The launch took place in Creative Spark Downtown from 11am-1pm and former All Ireland medal winner, Oisin McConville, spoke about his own experience of a 14 year problem with gambling.
Turas Manager, Nicki Jordan, said:
“We are delighted to be launching this important service in Dundalk. We know from a recent ESRI survey that there are approximately 1200 people in Dundalk with a problem gambling addiction. Not everyone who gambles has a problem with it but for those that have it can be destructive.
“The launch coincided with an advertising campaign with messaging to raise awareness about the impact of problem gambling.
“The billboards and bus shelters are visible around Dundalk to draw attention to the destruction gambling can do to one's life” she continued.
“Gambling can be very subtle, unlike substance misuse, it is very easy to hide. Signs of problem gambling include obsessing about matches, lying, making excuses and withdrawing from life.
“Problem gambling causes deep despair, hopelessness and loss of control. When someone is in the throes of gambling they can lose their self-esteem, wellbeing, confidence, peace of mind. It can affect friendships, relationships and family members.
"In Turas we help to piece people back together, finding themselves again and a new life, without gambling."
