Laois TD and Minister of State in the Department of Finance Séan Fleming joined Lithuanian Ambassador Mr. Marijus Gudynas to Ireland on a tour of schools in Laois in recent days to commemorate European Day and Irelands 50th anniversary of the referendum to join the European Union.
Monday, May 9 saw Minister Fleming and Ambassador Marijus Gudynas Lithuanian visit Shanahoe NS, Camross NS, Paddock NS, Raheen NS and the Dunamase College in Portlaoise.
The following day Minister Fleming and the Ambassador went to St. Pauls NS, Mountmellick, Holy Family Senior School, Portlaoise and Barrowhouse NS.
The tour concluded on May 11 with a visit to Errill NS.
The schools which were included for visits had participated in the Europe 50 Blue Star Programme and European Parliament Ambassador School Programme.
Students displayed work they had completed on their projects and there was also time allowed during our visits for some questions from the students to Minister Fleming and and Ambassador Marijus Gudynas.
The Laois Offaly TD spoke after the tour.
"I would like to thank all the schools for the very warm welcome we received and the great efforts made by the teachers and students which included students playing music , wearing the colours and clothes representing EU countries and having their project work displayed in their classrooms.
"It goes without saying that the most interesting part of each of the visit were the very detailed and interesting questions posed by the students in relation to Europe and all other political matters," concluded the Fianna Fáil representative.
