Vandalism of vacant retail units in Market Place in Clonmel has been condemned

A  number of vacant retail units in Market Place, Clonmel have been vandalised over the last few days.

The vandalism has been condemned by Cllr Michael Murphy who witnessed a disturbing scene as he walked through the area on Wednesday evening.

"I was walking through Market Place at about 5.30pm and I noticed five teenagers who were using traffic cones to attempt to break windows in some of the vacant units.  I challenged them and I left the scene when another group came along. I reported the matter to An Garda Síochána and in fairness they were on the scene very quickly," said Cllr Murphy.

"I was shocked to come across it. The vandalism is shocking and something has to be done about this area in town," said Cllr Murphy.

Cllr Murphy said he was aware that council officials had met with the owners of the Market Place site in the last few days and had asked them to secure the vacant retail outlets.

"This site has been vacant for far too long now. I am aware that the owners do have an ambitious vision for the area and I would call on them and the council to engage and move things on," said Cllr Murphy.
