One of the most popular venues for social dancing in the South East will celebrate its 30th anniversary on St Patrick’s night.
There will be a special night of dancing at the Fethard Ballroom on the night to celebrate the big occasion.
Covid-19 did cause some disruption for the loyal supporters of the venue, but apart from that setback, dancing has thrived at the venue for three decades.
Every Sunday night dancers from Waterford,Kilkenny, Carlow, Wexford, Cork and Limerick arrive at the Fethard venue to enjoy a great night out.
“We are delighted that Fethard continues to be such a popular venue. They do travel a distance and Fethard Ballroom is one of the most popular venues on the social dancing circuit in the south-east,” said Sean O’Donovan, Chairman of the Fethard Ballroom Committee.
“The people who come to Fethard are very passionate about the social dancing and they have a great night out,” he said.
Social dancing is the main activity and is crucial to keeping the bills paid to ensure the Fethard Ballroom continues to remain open for use for the community.
The hall is also used by the committee for cards, activities for children, occasional concerts and for gatherings after local funerals.
In recent years the Fethard Ballroom, which was built as a cinema in the forties, has undergone extensive renovations and a new roof has been provided.
“The building was on its last legs and it would be derelict now only for a group of people came together to save it for the community,” said Sean O’Donovan.
“The work had to be done to save the building. We received funding from Leader and Coolmore. If that work was not done the facility would have been lost to the community,” said Sean O’Donovan.
The popular Checkers will provide the music on St Patrick’s night on what will be a big celebration for the social dancing community in Fethard.
The celebratory night of dancing in Fethard will begin at 8.30pm and continue until 11.30pm.
