SIX female students from Clare have been awarded a ‘prestigious’ scholarship.
The first ever national women in STEM2D (science, technology, engineering, maths, manufacturing and design) undergraduate awards ceremony was held in Thomond Park, Limerick and saw 62 students from five universities receive special scholarships.
This is the 8th year of the annual awards programme, run by Johnson & Johnson, and aims to advance female participation in STEM fields. This is the first year that the company has brought all recipients together for a day-long event.
The six Clare students selected to receive the scholarships are studying: Tara Diggins, Shona O'Halloran, Emer Moynihan, Seoda O'Keeffe, Sarah Crott and Tara McInerney.
Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, Simon Harris TD, said: “What they have achieved to date is inspirational and I hope will encourage more women to study STEM.
“There is so much more we can do to reduce the gender gap in STEM studies and I am committed to pulling every lever to do so, and making sure that there are no barriers to educational opportunities.”
