AVIATION firm Lufthansa Technik Turbine has announced the creation of 25 new jobs with the opening of a new facility in Shannon.

The firm, which announced widespread job losses during the Covid-19 pandemic, appears to be back to growth with the news of the opening of a state-of-the-art engine parts and accessories repair facility at Hurlers' Cross.

Measuring 2,000 square metres, the move means the company has 10,000 square metres for maintenance and repair in the region.

It's allowed Lufthansa Technik Turbine to expand its portfolio by including engine manifolds - parts of the interior of an engine which distribute air and fluids - among its services.

The company has been operational in Ireland since 1992, and also has bases in Kildare and Dublin.

The chief executive of Lufthansa Technik Turbine Michael Malewski says that as the company continues to grow and diversify, recruitment remains a priority.

"Today is a very exciting day for the business in Ireland. With this new facility we are diversifying our product portfolio and enhancing our manufacturing capabilities to better serve our customers’ needs. The diversification and expansion of our core maintenance, repair, overhaul services portfolio has happened fast and the team has worked tirelessly to bring this project to fruition. I believe we have some of the best people in the world working for us at each of our three locations, but we need even more as we experience rapid post-pandemic recovery," he said.

Mr Malewski said there's a particular need for more experienced aviation engineers as well as qualified mechanics and engineers from any field interested in moving into the aviation industry.

The launch of the new facility was attended by Limerick TD Kieran O'Donnell, who is a Minister of State at the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage.

He said: "This is a significant and welcome investment announcement by Lufthansa Technik and is a fantastic sign of not only rapid recovery, but of growth in the aviation sector once again. Lufthansa Technik is a long-standing and significant employer in Ireland and is particularly prominent in the Shannon cluster. Congratulations to the entire Lufthansa Technik team on its latest development and I look forward to seeing what’s next for the business in Ireland."
