The Council are aware that the surface of the road has distorted in recent months

Clare County Council have heard that remedial works to a "distorted" road in Kilkee will depend on available funding, according to Alan Kennelly, Senior Executive Engineer of the West Clare Municipal District (MD).

The road in question is the Dough Road (L6048) in Kilkee, specifically the first 800 metres and this notice of motion was brought forward by Fianna Fáil Councillor Michael Shannon at a West Clare MD meeting.

Mr Kennelly, in a written reply, confirmed that the road is not included on the 2025 schedule of Municipal District works and that it is a “bog rampart” road, meaning it could be built on a peat foundation. In other words, they came from the early bog roads and now present new and challenging technical issues.

"The ground on either side of the road is lower than the road itself, so the road is an embankment. This causes the road to distort and deform more quickly than roads with foundations on better ground," said the Executive Engineer.

"We are aware that surface of the road has distorted in recent months. The West Clare MD has surveyed the road recently with a view towards carrying out some remedial works, but it will ultimately depend on the amount of funding available," he added.

Mr Kennelly will get an estimate of the costs involved in this work and the team in the Municipal District will explore opportunities to secure funding to reconstruct and resurface this road.
