Status yellow warnings for rain, wind and thunderstorms issued for much of the country

MET ÉIREANN have issued a Status Yellow thunderstorm warning for county Clare in the wake of Storm Gerritt.

The warning has been issued for Clare, Munster, Donegal and Connacht.

Scattered thunderstorms are forecast across the west of the country, with lightning and hail possible too.

A wind and rain warning for Clare, Kerry, Donegal, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo, Sligo is also in effect from this Thursday morning until 6am Friday.

There will be strong and gusty southwest to west winds at times.

A combination of spring tides, large waves and strong winds may result in some coastal flooding, while squally showers may lead to localised flooding.

Met Eíreann have also warned the public to expect possible power outages and hazardous travelling conditions.

There was strong winds and rain through Wednesday night as Storm Gerritt passed through the country, but some counties saw much less damage than expected.

However ESB crews are working to restore power to hundreds of homes across Clare following the heavy weather through the night.
