A NEW STATE-of-the-art special school facility will be opening on the grounds of a popular existing school in Limerick.

20 new classrooms have gotten the go ahead for development on the grounds of Crescent College Comprehensive S.J. This new facility will accommodate students with autistic spectrum disorder and complex needs from Red Hill Special School.

While the Crescent College Comprehensive SJ and Redhill School will be co-located, they will operate separately. The relocation of Redhill’s School will be accompanied by further development of Crescent’s facilities and infrastructure, including additional teaching rooms and sports facilities.

The Jesuit Provincial Fr. Shane Daly, as Trustee announced the news, he said: "All in education recognise the vital role Special Schools play, and I trust all in the Crescent school community will join with me in welcoming this important development for Limerick.

"We look forward to working with Redhill Special School and the wider school community in the development of this plan and supporting its implementation  over the next number of years as the Crescent continues with its own campus development  for its students and staff.”

Red Hill first opened in Limerick in 2008 and is currently operating out of sub-optimal accommodation within the Rehab Care Campus, Patrickswell, Limerick.

The Minister for Education has informed Willie O'Dea TD that agreement has been reached with the Joint Trustee of Crescent College Comprehensive S.J., Irish Jesuit Provincial and Red Hill Special School.

Willie O'Dea TD said: "This is wonderful news for pupils in Limerick with autistic spectrum disorder and complex needs. I have been making ongoing representations to have more classes and better facilities for special needs children and I am delighted that there is agreement to deliver this huge project in Limerick.

“Capital works will be informed by a campus master plan and will include the provision of a Special Education Needs facility and enhanced accommodation to facilitate increased enrolments at Crescent College. Well done to all involved in bringing this fantastic project to this stage of development."
