THE ELECTRICITY Supply Board (ESB) is advising the public to “remain vigilant” following thefts of electric vehicle (EV) cables from chargers at a number of Limerick locations.

A spokesperson for the organisation told Limerick Live that it is aware of thefts of tether cables from its chargers at Crescent Shopping Centre and the Ennis Road.

ESB confirmed it is “working closely with the authorities to address the matter”.

Posts on social media shared pictures and videos of the cut cables, with commenters criticising those responsible.

One person commented, “They really need to bring in ID & registration for anyone bringing scrap metal to the scrap metal dealers,” while another said, “Scumbags….. A couple of euros of profit and damage for thousands….”

In response to a query from Limerick Live, an ESB spokesperson said: “ESB is aware of recent incidences involving the theft of EV tether cables from our chargers at Crescent Shopping Centre and the Ennis Road and are working closely with the authorities to address the matter.

“We encourage all stakeholders to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity at any EV charging site.”

One EV driver told Limerick Live: “It’s disgraceful. It’ll cost a fortune for these chargers to be fixed, and in the meantime it leaves drivers stranded with nowhere to charge their car.”
