AN ANIMAL welfare activist has become the latest candidate to put their name forward in the upcoming election race for Limerick’s directly elected mayor.

Gerben Uunk, the co-founder and secretary of the Party for Animal Welfare will contest the June 7 election.

“Animal cruelty is at an all-time high in Limerick. I challenge whoever is elected to the highest office in Limerick to prioritise measures to tackle ever increasing anti-social behaviour towards animals and all sentient beings, which includes humans,” said

Mr Uunk, a Dutch national living in Newcastle West.

If elected as mayor, he said he will seek to have coursing tracks converted to housing.

“Housing is far more important than facilitating State-sponsored blood-sports,” he argued.

On top of this, he will also order plant-based foods to be served in all public facilities.

Mr Uunk was elected as a councillor before - in the 1990s for the Dutch Green Party.
