THE NUMBER of parking fines issued in Limerick in 2023 is on course to see a sharp rise from last year.

Information presented to Social Democrats councillor Elisa O'Donovan revealed that in total 17,363 tickets were issued by traffic wardens and gardai across the last 18 months.

A driver can see their vehicle ticketed for exceeding the amount of time paid for when parking on the streets in the city, parking illegally, using a disabled space without permission, causing an obstruction or a number of other reasons.

Liam Browne, the senior executive engineer in roads, traffic and cleansing, confirmed that 10,147 parking fines were issued in Limerick City last year.

In the first six months of 2023 and the opening four days of July, a total of 7,216 fines were issued.

Fixed charge fines for parking offences can range from €40 to €200, with the charge increasing if it's not paid within 28 days.

On the basis of a €40 fine in the city, these figures mean local authority staff could have collected as much as €694,520 over the last 18 months.
