A PATCH of land which acted as a buffer to a former municipal dump is to be sold by the local authority.

At this month’s Adare-Rathkeale municipal district meeting, councillors were asked to take note of the sale of an almost three-acre patch of land at Gortadroma near Ballyhahill.

The land is planned to be sold to a private party for €25,000. The buyer recently bought a vacant home fronting this land.

He has since fully refurbished this, and plans to buy and restore the surrounding land to graze animals.

In a briefing note to councillors, head of property Jayne Leahy confirmed the local authority does not require the land.

Council acquired ownership of the land in 2006 as the landfill site began to wind down its operation.

It closed fully in 2014, but a waste and recycling centre remains active in the immediate area.

The sale is expected to be rubber-stamped at the next full council meeting which will take place at the end of May.

The purchase of three properties in the city by private individuals are also expected to be green-lit at this meeting.
