Call for return of granite seating to Limerick street

Limerick City and County Council declines to give commitment on return of furniture
THE COUNCIL has declined to give a commitment to return seating to a city centre street.
Social Democrats councillor Shane Hickey-O’Mara questioned local authority bosses as to why two granite seats were taken away from Bedford Row.
"It goes without saying but public seating in our city centre is crucial, we want people to come in and enjoy spending time in the city and to remove public seating makes it less hospitable and far less welcoming,” he said. “These amenities belong to residents.”

Patricia Liddy, a director in the roads department stated the seating was damaged.
One of the seats, she stated, was moved to the People’s Park. The other could not be repaired, so was removed.
"Limerick City and County Council will review seating arrangements in the city during 2026,” Ms Liddy added in a written response.
The granite seats were added to Bedford Row when the street became pedestrianised in the late 2000s.
One was installed outside Figaro’s Barbers, the other beside the Richard Harris statue which is located by Bank of Ireland.
