Politicians want Limerick to get group in the same manner as Dublin and Cork have

A CALL is being made on Taoiseach Micheál Martin and Tanaiste Simon Harris to set up a task force to help Limerick develop, following similar initiatives in Dublin and Cork.

Members of Limerick council’s metropolitan district have agreed to write to the two top figures in Government to formally request the creation of a Limerick City Task Force.

The call came from Fine Gael’s metropolitan councillors - Cllr Olivia O'Sullivan, district leader Cllr Daniel Butler, plus councillors Dan McSweeney, Sarah Kiely and Peter Doyle, who chairs the economic committee.

Cllr O’Sullivan said as Ireland’s third city, it is high time a task force was created for Limerick.

She pointed to the benefits Dublin and Cork have seen from their own task forces. In Dublin, An Post chief executive David McRedmond has, since 2024, been chairing an action group focused on rejuvenating the capital’s city centre.

“The task force was mandated to take an evidence-informed approach in its work and to provide recommendations to improve the city centre’s public realm, safety, and experience.

“The goal was to make Dublin a more thriving, attractive, and safe cityscape; and a desirable location to live, work, do business and visit,” she said.

Eirgrid chairman Brendan Tuohy is chairing the Cork City Futures Group, which was established on April 1.

Cllr O’Sullivan said both task forces enjoy Government support, and pointed to the fact in February this year, the Dublin group’s work appeared to bear fruit, as plans were unveiled to regenerate its city centre, seeking €114m from Government and putting in place 10 recommendations.

“As Ireland’s third city, it is now Limerick City’s turn to have a task force created by government with mandated actions specific to Limerick city and our unique challenges,” Cllr O’Sullivan added.
