IN A BID to tackle environmental concerns, Councillor Joe Leddin has called for Limerick city to be made a campaign poster-free zone during the upcoming local elections, European Parliament elections, and the election of Limerick's first directly elected mayor.

The councillor proposed the motion at the November Metropolitan Meeting of Limerick City and County Council (LCCC), highlighting the unique situation Limerick faces next June, with a minimum of three elections and the possibility of a constitutional referendum.

The councillor expressed concern over the “wallpapering [of] the city” with election posters.

“I just think it's timely that we have a reasoned debate in terms of the suitability or otherwise of putting up posters.”

On top of the environmental issues, the Labour councillor also noted the aesthetic concerns they pose.

“We all know the issues with the cable ties that are swinging around poles, not for weeks and months, but probably for years after an election, and they're a complete eyesore,” he stated.

Cllr Leddin then acknowledged the financial challenges faced by smaller parties and Independents, suggesting that a poster-free area could “level the playing field”.

“I think it would send out a very powerful statement as well as we strive as a city and as a region to improve efforts towards the whole sustainability agenda,” he added.

Green Party councillor, Seán Hartigan, seconded the motion.
