COUNCILLORS have backed a proposal to return the former library in Caherconlish to the local community.

The disposal of property received unanimous backing from councillors at the most recent Cappamore-Kilmallock Municipal District meeting.

A council staff member informed the meeting that the building is approximately 40 metres square and ceased operating as a part-time library over a decade ago.

“The area is currently successfully serviced by a mobile library and the building is no longer required by the library service,” say the council.

Caherconlish Caherline Community Council made the application to the council for the old library and has the support of locals who are “anxious that this former community building find a new community use”.

“The building has limited value as it has no kitchen / toilet facilities,” say the council.

The proposal before councillors was the disposal of the property to Caherconlish Caherline Community Councillor for a “nominal amount”.

Cllr Brigid Teefy said the building is very small and there is very little parking but the community council is excellent and will put it to good use.

Cllr John Egan asked what the community council's plans are for the old library.

The council staff member said they “don't honestly know”.

Cllr Teefy said the plans may be for something of a historical nature or arts or as a community hub.

Cllr Eddie Ryan said: “No doubt they have a plan”.

Cathaoirleach Mike Donegan said the old library in Kilmallock was transformed into a playgroup about 12 years ago.

“They renovated it and it is a great facility,” said Cllr Donegan. After receiving the backing of local councillors the proposed disposal of property will be included on the agenda for the full council meeting in September.
