Mr Ryan was a well-known and popular vet in Mulcair Vets where he was a senior partner. He had travelled to the French capital to see Ireland play in the World Cup last year when he tragically passed away.
Jimmy McCarthy was the last member of the show with unbroken service since it was formed back in 1954 until his passing last year. His love of the show has passed on through the generations and his son John is the current chairperson.
John McCarthy made a presentation to parish priest Fr Dick Browne who marked 50 years in the priesthood this year.
John Hassett, secretary, said he would have loved to have the Liam MacCarthy at the show for the fifth year in a row.
“They’ve done us proud. They've given us a dream that we thought we would never wake up from,” said Mr Hassett.
These were the four loudest rounds of applause. of many, on the night.
It began with new treasurer Brid Dillon addressing the crowd. She has taken over from PJ Blackwell. Another person who has been an integral part of the show but is now taking a step back is Maura Walsh. She has handed the PRO reins to Catherine O’Brien.
Ms Dillon said it costs a lot of money to run the show, which she said she is finding out! There isn’t much change from €100,000 every year.
Ms Dillon thanked new and longstanding sponsors.
“The show would not be as successful as it is without you. It allows the committee to add new exhibitions and attractions each year,” said Ms Dillon.
Pat Fogarty, president, paid tribute to the late Jimmy McCarthy, and Patrick (Pa) Gleeson who died in May. He was the last founding member from 1954.
Mr Hassett took the microphone and had the crowd in the palm of his hand with his speech, which touched on everything from history to hurling and lots more besides.
He paid moving tributes to Brian Ryan, Patrick Gleeson and Jimmy McCarthy.
Mr Hassett recalled the torrential rain that fell on the eve of last year's show and how committee members met on the grounds at 6am to make the tough decision on whether to plough ahead or not. They went for it and it turned out a smashing day and show.
Cathaoirleach Martin Ryan remembered the late and great former secretary, Paddy Ryan “Luke”. Cllr Ryan said Mr Ryan “Luke” always spoke about the importance of community and how that was at the very heart of the Cappamore Show.
It was left to chairman John McCarthy to conclude proceedings, saying while the Liam MacCarthy won’t be in the showgrounds they will still have a celebration of the very best of Limerick in Ballyvoreen on August 17.
