Confusion over abrupt late-night noises heard in Limerick city

IN THE early hours of Thursday morning, confusion gripped a large number of residents of Limerick city as they awoke to abrupt noises in their locality.
At approximately 2am, in the Cleeves area on North Circular Road, one local resident stated: "I woke up to what I thought were gunshots."
Continuing, the witness explained that there was no local notice of military training in the area, which is why the noises peaked their interest.
However, the source of the disturbance turned out to be an unexpected display of fireworks from near Sarsfield Bridge.
In a statement, a garda spokesperson said: "It is believed that fireworks were discharged close to Sarsfield Bridge at approximately 2am."
It is not known the specific occasion for the fireworks.
