Facility currently in the ownership of Limerick Diocese

COUNCIL executives are hoping to purchase a community hall on the southside of Limerick.

Our Lady Queen of Peace community centre, which lies adjacent to Roxboro garda station, is currently in the ownership of Limerick Diocese.

However, council says it is working to buy it as soon as possible.

The issue was raised at the metropolitan district local authority meeting by City East councillor Catherine Slattery.

In a written question, she asked what the status of the purchase of the site is.

“I have been advised funding to renovate the building was applied for and granted to the council,” her question states.

Replying, Fiona McCormack, the senior executive officer in the Regeneration areas sports and recreation area confirmed approval in principle was received from the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage to fund the refurbishment of the centre, alongside three other local projects.

“The council are proceeding with securing the necessary consultants to advise and assist in the implementation of these four projects,” Ms McCormack wrote.

“One of the four projects is the refurbishment of the Our Lady Queen of Peace Community Hall to support wider community and sporting uses. The council do not currently own the community hall, so it is currently undertaking the relevant steps towards its acquisition as soon as possible,” she wrote in the answer.

Cllr Slattery said: “It’s a much needed facility for the local area.”

Fianna Fail TD Willie O’Dea added: “Our Lady Queen of Peace serves a very united, very cohesive community. This is potentially a magnificent facility which would strengthen community in the area, something we all need going forward.”
