Hogan's Craft Butchers ceased trading after almost a half a century last year

PLANNERS have given conditional permission to proposals by a businessman to redevelop a former butcher’s shop in the city centre.

Homayon Karokhail, who hails from Afghanistan, has secured permission to open a new restaurant on William Street at the building which up to 12 months ago housed Hogan’s Craft Butchers.

It ceased trading after almost 50 years.

Now, the premises looks set for a new lease of life, with Mr Karokhail permitted to change the use of the unit.

He had lodged papers with Limerick City and County Council to change the use of the ground floor from a butcher’s shop to a restaurant with a takeaway facility.

On top of this, he is planning to install extract ducting into the basement area, and erect new signage at the prominent unit.

Mr Karokhail said in August: “I'm still thinking about what it might be. I have a plan for something a bit different, a new franchise. I'd like to find a good new company.”

He acknowledged the location is “very good”.

“Lots of people are around there waiting at the bus stop. There needs to be a place to sit down, get a tea or coffee, breakfast, lunch. Small portions or big portions. It's a strong location,” he said.

The businessman says he believes he will be able to open through the day until the late night and early morning.

City centre-based Fianna Fail councillor Azad Talukder had also welcomed the project.

“It's a bit of progress for the city, so it's obviously welcome. I don't know exactly what business he is doing, but I know it will be food-related. Obviously, it's a positive for the city,” said the City West member.

Planners gave the development the green light subject to seven conditions.

This includes a stipulation that before any development kicks off, a final detailed design for the shop’s signage be submitted to the planning authority.
