LIMERICK City and County Council is to take delivery of two new road sweepers.

These will be available to sweep streets and laneways throughout the city.

The local authority says their provision will allow the two existing compact sweepers to be used more for cycleways across the urban area.

The information was provided by traffic boss Hugh McGrath in answer to a question from Labour City West councillor Joe Leddin.

At present, the council has two large road sweepers, two mini-sweepers and one small hot-wash sweeper in its armoury to keep the city clean.

Mr McGrath has previously said that the hot wash sweeper is mainly deployed on high quality pavements, for example the refurbished O’Connell Street and nearby streets.

“The mini sweepers are intended mainly for use on cycle lanes, however due to the absence of two compact [medium sized sweepers], they are also deployed in the city centre for general use on streets or laneways,” he explained in an answer at last month's metropolitan district meeting to Cllr Elisa O'Donovan.
