The cost will be in the order of between €15,000 / €20,000

A COUNCILLOR hopes the dog days are over for man’s best friend in south Limerick.

Cllr PJ Carey put down a motion at this month’s meeting of the Cappamore-Kilmallock Municipal District that Limerick City and County Council would identify a suitable area in the town of Kilmallock for a dog recreation park.

He also requested that the council would provide costings for the proposed facility.

In response, a senior engineer said that the council will carry out an assessment of the existing green spaces in Kilmallock and identify a suitable location.

They estimated that the cost will be in the order of between €15,000 / €20,000 for the project.

Cllr Carey said this  would include seats, waste bins and fencing.

“Dog parks are becoming quite common but there are none within a 20-mile radius of Kilmallock,” said the Sinn Fein councillor.

Limerick City and County Council has successfully developed dog parks in Mungret Park, Baggott Estate, located beside Ballinacurra Road in the city, and in The Demesne, Newcastle West.

“It gives dog owners a sense of community and research shows that these dog parks improve the physical and social health of both dogs and owners.

“It would also, potentially, reduce dog fouling on the footpaths of the town,” said Cllr Carey, who notes no planning permission is required for such a project.

He concluded by saying: “l plan on using my GMA (general municipal allocation) as a funding source and would hope that it would be completed this year.”
