Decision made on plans for major upgrade of community centre in Limerick

King's Island Community Centre looks set to double in height following council decision
THE community centre at King’s Island is set to go from one floor to two after councillors approved a major extension of the building.
At this month’s metropolitan district meeting, members gave the green light to the development of the facility, located at Verdant Place in St Mary’s Park.
According to the plans, the existing youth and community centre, which measures 232 square metres will be expanded to 911 square metres.
On the ground floor, there will be a new community cafe and servery area, a multi-purpose sports hall, an office, plus facilities for meetings and training rooms.
On the new first floor there will be more office space.
A new roof structure will incorporate roof lights over the community cafe and multi-purpose sports hall at ground level.
The development will also include public realm works around the building at Verdant Place, plus a new multi-use games area to the northside of the community centre building.
This will adjoin the existing playground.
The new facility will be operated by Limerick Island Community Partners, which serves as the main community development organisation for both King’s Island and St Mary’s Parish.
On this occasion, the application was approved by councillors, and not planners.
That’s because members have a veto over applications planned for public land.
Mayor John Moran, who has championed the expansion, welcomed the news.
He said: “It’s great. I think it’s important, because people hear about things that are blocked, so I think it’s important they see the stuff moving forward.”
