Decision made on plans to extend nursing home in Limerick

Facility at Kilmallock Road in business since 1970s
PLANS to extend a nursing home on the outskirts of the city have been approved by council.
The Good Shepherd Nursing Home, located at Kilmallock Road on the southside, sought the green light from planners to extend the rear of its facility.
The extension is to comprise of 26 new beds.
On top of this, a first floor extension is planned providing office accommodation, while the existing front entrance porch is to be demolished, the plans state.
In their place there will be a new entrance porch with a family room and reception area.
In supporting documents to council, management at the Good Shepherd Nursing Home pointed out an application was made in January 2017 for a much larger extension to the facility.
However, with the onset of Covid-19, a decision was made not to proceed with this, and instead the plans were scaled back.
The business has been in operation since November 1975 and has been run by the same family throughout these 49 years.
At present, 25 people work at the nursing home.
The firm said the development is required “to allow the nursing home to continue trading as a viable concern while also upgrading our facility in line with current statutory and future guidelines for the benefit of our staff and residents.”
Cllr Catherine Slattery wrote to planners in support of the application.
“We need more nursing homes for our elderly and this particular one is just on the outskirts of the city with a bus stop across the road,” she stated.
