US president set for short stopover to allow Air Force One to refuel in local airport

DONALD Trump is set to land in Shannon Airport this Thursday afternoon, reports have suggested.

The American president is expected to be on board Air Force One, which will refuel on the tarmac at the local airport, before heading across the Atlantic.

Mr Trump, who owns the Trump International Golf Links and Hotel resort at Doonbeg in Clare, is returning to the USA from his visit to the World Economic Forum at Davos in Switzerland.

It's understood bosses at Shannon Airport have put in place a major security operation for the visit of the New York businessman.

His son Eric Trump had visited Trump Doonbeg Golf Resort in Clare in the last few days following the discovery of a suspicious package on site.

The American premier has been in the news this week after he backed down on threats to seize Greenland by force from Denmark, and gave information geared at ensuring the security of the Arctic territory.

He also lifted the threat of sanctions against European nations that spoke out against the threats to Denmark and remarked that the deal gives Washington “everything we wanted”.

Mr Trump also met with Ukraine president Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

The encounter came hours before US envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner were due to hold talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow.

The Shannon Group, which owns and operates Shannon Airport, did not return a request for comment from Limerick Live.
