Doorbell camera helps gardai identify suspect following burglaries in Limerick estate

A SUSPECTED burglar was identified by gardai after they viewed footage which was obtained from a doorbell camera.
The man has been arrested and questioned about two burglaries which occurred in the Castletroy area of the city.
"Gardai look for CCTV in every crime and even though the suspect may have covered up their faces gardai still use it for the exact time of a crime and can discover more evidence from other CCTV," explained Sergeant Ber Leetch.
"Two burglaries in Castletroy were solved with the help of doorbell CCTV. This captured the image of the suspect and he was subsequently identified by gardai in Henry Street, he has since been arrested," she added.
Doorbell cameras, which are becoming increasingly common, allow people to watch their property using an app on their smartphone or tablet when away.
"A tiny camera is fitted into a doorbell and works off your wi-fi. It is easy to install and once connected to your smartphone you can check who is at your door by looking at your phone. You can also have a two-way conversation with them. The person outside does not know whether you are speaking to them from within the house or not," said Sgt Leetch.
Doorbell cameras are activated by motion and did not use significant amounts of electricity.
